Web Sites Contain Health Care Cost Information
October 29, 2009 by Tom

As consumers of health care, we usually have no idea what any tests, procedures or any other
medical needs we have might cost. This Wall Street Journal article lists web sites which
can help us at least have an idea or a basis for what we should be paying for health care services.
Hopefully, more and more information such as this will become available so as consumers we
can affect health care costs from the bottom up. Look in the near future for a new section on
health care costs on our www.tkfamilyplan.com site (see link in right column) that will list the sites
in this article and others as they are available. Whether we are insured or not, as the article points
out, this is valuable information.

Cell Phone Distraction

Those of us who remember the series “Hill Street Blues” will recall Sgt. Phil Esterhaus
ending daily roll call at the police station with the words “Hey, let’s be careful out there!!”
I think the same warning can apply to all of us who drive a care these days as more and more
of us are talking on the phone, texting, listening to music on headphones and who knows what else.
The article here from the New York Times relates a limited but eye opening study performed on
campus at Western Washington University. I don’t know why this study struck a chord with me
when there is a lot of evidence published about the dangers of cell phone use while driving,
but I haven’t been done so since I read this.

Yoga Benefits All Age Groups
As this article from HealthKey points out, yoga is an excellent tool
for fitness, stress relief and rehab for all ages, from babies to grandparents.
Yoga also can enhance your current workout program and performance
for those who like to run, swim, strength train, etc. with improved flexibility,
balance and strength.
Personally, I began a moderate yoga session the first of the year (20-30 minutes), three times a week most weeks
and it has had a very positive impact on my running performance. I recently completed the
half marathon portion of the Kansas City Marathon, the longest distance I have run in a long time.
It wasn’t just the race though where I benefitted, but also the long training runs, both during the
runs and recovery periods.
