F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2010
It’s hard to believe with all of the media attention over the last couple years, but it appears the obesity issue in the US is getting worse instead of better. Obesity rates increased in 28 states year to year and decreased only in the District of Columbia. Most of us know intellectually that we need to monitor what we take in and increase our level of movement and exercise and yet reports like this one keep on coming. When and what will be the tipping point?

Health Official Willing to Go to the Mat Over Obesity and Sugared Sodas
April 5, 2010 by Tom

Yet another controversial issue that is currently in the news. Many government agencies would love to see the additional revenue generated by a tax on sugared soda while health advocates talk about the positive effect the tax would have on obesity and overweight problems. On the other hand, politicians are being lobbied heavily by the soda industry itself along with grocery stores and other purveyors of soda.
Stay tuned. This is going to be interesting. Please comment below and let us know what you think.
U.S. Children: Generation Snack

This article reflects a study that surveyed over 31,000 kids but the results
would probably be similar if it surveyed 31,000 adults. It is constantly repeated
and painfully obvious, but if we just replaced highly sugared and salted snacks
with fresh fruit or even frozen fruit our calorie, processed sugar and salt
intake would decrease dramatically. Watch your local grocery store for sale
prices on fresh fruit and you (and your kids should you have them) try it for a
week and see how all of you feel.

As we explain in the About Us section of our site
(see link for Family Health and Wellness in right column), after serving the
school market with fitness equipment sales, we realized that
the children’s obesity and overweight issues were just not a kid’s
problem, but one that involved the whole family so we developed
the TK Family Plan (http://www.tkfamilyplan.com/)
The article below from the NY Times emphasizes the need for family
involvement.
Please check out
TK Family Plan for free nutrition information, a fitness and walking
program, shopping tips and much more so you can help your children
and your entire family develop a lifetime mentality of wellness.

The First Lady’s public awareness campaign, title “Let’s Move”
is directed primarily to children’s health, wellness and fitness issues.
This program can do nothing but help but as we note on the Home Page
of our web site TKFamilyPlan.com (see link at right), these issues are not just children’s issues, they are really a family issue that needs to be addressed as such.
This article appeared in the LA Times and gives you a good basic idea of the program and we will provide more information about “Let’s Move” as it becomes available.

Popcorn’s Dark Secret
Wow, there are some scary numbers in this article from the NY Times.
Keep these in mind the next time you go to the movies and think you
feel hungry. Lots of calories, high in fat, high in sodium.
How good is it, anyway?

Companies fall short in advertising healthy foods to children
Manufacturers in this debate say 2 years is not enough time to measure results of their
pledge to reduce the number of ads for unhealthy foods aimed at kids. This LA Times
article does a pretty good job of telling both sides of the story.

Some fitness video games may not leave you breathless
From the LA Times, some interesting information regarding fitness oriented
video games, especially the Wii games and Wii fitness. Click on our family wellness
site, www.tkfamilyplan.com/, in the column at right and go to the fitness section
to see our fitness program that can be performed in your home with little or
no fitness equipment. Wii Fit games and our plan complement each other well
and can be used together as an excellent fitness program, especially for beginners.
